Ghost knots 04.06.25
Ghost knots are visible traces left on threads in quipu (Andean knotted cord recording systems) when knots have been deliberately untied.
In quipu, these traces served practical purposes: khipukamayuqs (quipu keepers) would untie and retie knots to reflect changing inventories, and some communities annually unknotted their quipu for reuse. The resulting ghost knots created palimpsests—layered records where previous configurations remained visible even after unknotting.
Ghost knots are accompaniment circles for considering how we address endings and attend to grief related to creative work.
What possibilities emerge when we resist the pressure to resolve disorientation or uncertainty in creative processes?
How "not needing to know" and untranslatability can be active, politically charged practices rather passive states.
How might we develop better practices around endings in creative work and attending to grief as a refusal of the capitalist demand to "move on"?
